There are 3 things I really love in life - Heavy Metal, Kicking (virtual) Ass and Free. Well Evony lets me do all three at the same time. AT THE SAME TIME! Evony is a free MMORTS (Massively Multi-player Online Real Time Strategy game). For the low, low price of zero dollars you can start your empire, join an alliance (or create your own) and pillage across the land. There is always one more field to take, a hill to conquer, an enemy to crush.

Evony is browser based so there is no painful waiting for a client to download. Just go to the main page and create your account and you are up and running in almost no time. I have played other RTS games and have always gotten bored with them after a few weeks. I've been playing Evony for a couple months now and it seriously gets more exciting every day. One of the newest members of my alliance is a friend from work who was laughing at us last week because we would gather around the water cooler discussing strategy - how to build troops faster, what where the best targets to hit, who was irritating us and needed a whuppin'. But he tried it over the weekend and now he has to close his office door at lunch time to make sure his cities are being looked after.

There are several friends from work in the game but we also have alliance members from all over the world - which is especially helpful as we can all be online at different times so someone is keeping a watch on our domain.

The quest system really walks n00bs through the beginner stage very well - it lets you know one step at a time what to concentrate on and rewards you for building your walls, barracks, academies, troops etc... The fact that you are playing against real people instead of dumb AI is what makes this so much more fun than previous RTS games I have played. Don't have your troops built up enough yet to defend against that guy marching on you? Mail him in game and work a deal! I have talked my way out of more beatings than I can remember - and I'm half an idiot! Chat with your neighbors to find out where their loyalties lie - maybe you can even lie, cheat and steal to get ahead. There is every style of play from Paladine-like defender of honor to scummy guerrilla warfare. The best players achieve a balance somewhere in between.

You can strike up accords with other alliances and declare them as friendly to have even more power over your server. You can also declare alliances hostile - some criminal scum poached on your resource field? Boy was he stupid. It's clobberin' time! Coordinate attacks with fellow alliance members and allied groups to wipe the ne'er-do-wells from your presence. Banish them to another state or even another server.

Evony is up to about 100 servers now and they add more as more people join. There will be room for you.

So I have talked about kicking virtual ass and the low, low price of nothing but how does this relate to metal? Well, I name all my heroes and towns after metal songs and/or bands - OK that is a stretch but I can also listen to metal while I keep Evony open in one tab and take care of my other surfing in another tab. There - Metal, Free and kicking virtual ass. I'm a real world-eater. (I got to see Bolt Thrower perform that song twice last May. I win.)
